OUTLINE
Kyoto is an ancient Capital in Japan for more than 10 centuries. (year
794-1868). Kyoto was called Heian-kyo at first, and was built in grid design.
It is said that the Capital had a remarkable resemblance of Choan, an ancient
Capital of China in the To Era. The Capital had 85-meter wide Suzaku-oji
Boulevard from south to north , that divided the Capital into Left Capital
and Right Capital. The Suzaku-oji Boulevard is said to locate around the
present Senbon-dori street.
The Capital of Japan was moved to Tokyo after Meiji Restoration in 1868. Kyoto had been the Capital of Japan during the times of Aristocracy and Samurai Governments. Samurai Governments such as Kamakura Shogunate, Muromachi Shogunate and Edo Shogunate ( 1192-1867) had real power to put administrative rules into effect.
17 world heritage sites are registered in Kyoto Prefecture. Kyoto is the
center of Japanese culture and religion. There are about 1,600 temples,
300 shrines and rows of old houses.
CLIMATE
Kyoto has a remarkable inland climate because of its topography.
The summer is hot and humid, and the winter is penetrating cold. The annual
range of temperature is wide. ( a recorded high temperature : 39.8 C Aug.8,1994
low : -8.1 C Jan.25,1963 )
The wind in summer is generally weak. Humid hot air remains late at night
in summer.
While, the wind in winter gathers to the city area from the surrounded
mountains. A penetrating cold is experienced in winter.
TOPOGRAPHY
The Kyoto Basin is surrounded by 3 mountains, Higashiyama, Kitayama and
Nishiyama. 6 main rivers including Kamo-gawa and Katsura-gawa run through
the basin. The basin has an alluvial fan in the north of the basin and
slope gently downward from north to south.
